Scope & Version 1 Calculator Limitations

To maintain absolute precision and legal compliance, Version 1 of this calculator operates within defined statutory boundaries:

  • Supported Work Dates: Work performed between October 1, 2025 and September 30, 2027. Dates prior to Oct 1, 2025 require historical rate lookup. Dates after Sept 30, 2027 require future CPI rate announcements.
  • Supported Payment Method: Single hourly rate payments. Salaried employees, commission structures, piece-rate systems, and flat daily rates require pay-period average compliance calculations not supported in v1 dollar outputs.
  • Supported Categories: General employees, qualifying students under 18, and qualifying homeworkers.
  • Tips & Gratuities: Tips and gratuities received by an employee do not count toward the minimum wage. Employers must pay the full applicable minimum wage rate regardless of tip income.

Step-by-Step Worked Examples

Example 1: General Employee Paid Below Minimum Rate

An adult retail employee in Toronto worked 40 hours during the week of July 15, 2026 at an hourly wage of $17.00/hr.

  • Work Date: July 15, 2026 (Falls in Oct 1, 2025 – Sept 30, 2026 period).
  • Statutory General Minimum Wage: $17.60/hr.
  • Minimum Required Gross Wages: 40 hours × $17.60 = $704.00 CAD.
  • Actual Gross Wages Paid: 40 hours × $17.00 = $680.00 CAD.
  • Estimated Shortfall: $704.00 – $680.00 = $24.00 CAD shortfall ($0.60/hr below statutory minimum).

Example 2: Student Under 18 Working Over 28 Hours During School Term

A 17-year-old high school student worked 32 hours during a regular school session week in March 2026 at an hourly rate of $16.60/hr.

  • Age & School Session: Under 18, school in session, but weekly hours (32 hrs) exceed the 28-hour threshold.
  • Applicable Minimum Wage Category: General Minimum Wage ($17.60/hr) applies because weekly hours exceeded 28 during term time.
  • Minimum Required Gross Wages: 32 hours × $17.60 = $563.20 CAD.
  • Actual Gross Wages Paid: 32 hours × $16.60 = $531.20 CAD.
  • Estimated Shortfall: $563.20 – $531.20 = $32.00 CAD shortfall.

Example 3: Homeworker Working From Home

A customer service representative performing administrative duties out of their home worked 37.5 hours in November 2026 at $18.50/hr.

  • Work Date: November 2026 (Falls in Oct 1, 2026 – Sept 30, 2027 period).
  • Statutory Homeworker Minimum Wage: $19.70/hr.
  • Minimum Required Gross Wages: 37.5 hours × $19.70 = $738.75 CAD.
  • Actual Gross Wages Paid: 37.5 hours × $18.50 = $693.75 CAD.
  • Estimated Shortfall: $738.75 – $693.75 = $45.00 CAD shortfall ($1.20/hr below homeworker minimum).
