How to Calculate Hourly Rate from Salary in Canada

Divide annual gross salary by the paid working hours represented by the salary to estimate an equivalent hourly rate.

Quick answer

Divide annual gross salary by paid hours per week multiplied by paid weeks per year.

Equivalent hourly rate = annual gross salary ÷ (paid hours per week × paid weeks per year)

A $52,000 salary covering 40 paid hours for 52 weeks is equivalent to $25.00 per hour.

The salary-to-hourly formula

The denominator must reflect the paid working time covered by the annual salary. A common full-time shortcut is 2,080 hours, but that only represents 40 paid hours for 52 weeks.

  1. Start with annual gross salary before deductions.
  2. Multiply paid hours per week by paid weeks per year.
  3. Divide annual salary by those total paid hours.

Step-by-step example

For a $52,000 salary covering 40 paid hours each week for 52 paid weeks:

  1. Annual paid hours: 40 × 52 = 2,080.
  2. Equivalent hourly rate: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00.
  3. Equivalent weekly gross pay: $52,000 ÷ 52 = $1,000.

Use gross salary

Do not use take-home pay after tax and deductions. The comparison should start with annual gross salary.

Worked examples

37.5-hour schedule

$60,000 ÷ (37.5 × 52)

$30.77 equivalent hourly rate

35-hour schedule

$70,000 ÷ (35 × 52)

$38.46 equivalent hourly rate

Choosing the right hours and weeks

Use the paid schedule that the annual salary actually covers. Paid vacation normally remains part of a salaried year. If the salary covers only part of a year, annualize consistently or compare the salary and hours over the same period.

For variable schedules, use a representative average only when it describes the arrangement fairly. Otherwise, total the salary and paid hours over the same longer period.

Equivalent hourly rate is not always a payroll rate

This calculation creates a comparison rate. It does not by itself determine an employee’s contractual hourly wage, overtime rate, minimum-wage compliance or another statutory entitlement. Those questions can use definitions and rules specific to the jurisdiction and employment situation.

Frequently asked questions

Should I always divide salary by 2,080?

No. That shortcut assumes 40 paid hours for all 52 weeks. Use the schedule represented by the salary.

Should I subtract paid vacation?

Usually no for this arithmetic comparison, because paid vacation is still paid time within an annual salary. Match salary and paid time over the same period.

Is the equivalent hourly rate my overtime rate?

Not necessarily. Overtime entitlement and the rate used can depend on applicable employment standards, exemptions and the employment arrangement.

Does the calculation use net salary?

No. Use annual gross salary before income tax, CPP, EI, benefit premiums and other deductions.
