Canadian Pay Stubs and Payroll Deductions
Read a pay statement from pay period to net amount, reconcile earnings and identify each deduction without assuming every province, territory or federally regulated workplace uses the same statement rules.
Pay-statement resources
Use the checklist to audit a statement, then open the related gross-pay resources when the earnings total needs to be rebuilt.
Canadian Pay Stub Checklist
Check the pay period, rates, hours, earnings, deductions, net pay and jurisdiction-specific statement fields.
Use pay stub checklist →What Counts as Gross Wages?

Planned after specialist researchThree totals to reconcile
A statement is easier to audit when earnings, deductions and payment are checked separately.
Gross pay
Regular earnings and any overtime, premiums, commissions, bonuses, vacation pay or other amounts shown before deductions.
Employee deductions
Income tax, CPP or QPP, EI, QPIP where applicable, and any other itemized authorized or required amounts.
Net pay
The amount remaining after employee deductions. Reimbursements or other non-wage payments may be displayed separately.
What to check every pay period
Dates, hours and rates
Match the pay period to your schedule and confirm regular, overtime or other rate categories against your records.
Gross-pay calculation
Reconcile hours and salary allocations, then identify vacation pay, holiday pay, bonuses, commissions and adjustments.
Amount and purpose
Every deduction should have a recognizable label and basis. Ask payroll about unfamiliar or unexpected amounts.
Statement requirements depend on jurisdiction
Ontario’s general wage-statement rules include the pay period, wage rate when applicable, gross wages and their calculation unless provided another way, each deduction and its purpose, room or board amounts, and net wages. Federally regulated employers generally provide the payment period, paid hours, wage rate, deduction details and actual sum received.
Other provinces and territories use their own statutes, regulations, terminology and record requirements. First confirm the governing jurisdiction.
Calculator boundary: WageWise can help reconstruct work hours and broad gross earnings. It does not currently calculate or verify income tax, CPP/QPP, EI, QPIP, benefit premiums, pension contributions, garnishments or net pay. Use the official CRA calculator for payroll deductions outside Quebec and the official Quebec service for Quebec payroll.
