Authoritative Gross Pay Formulas

Hourly Gross Pay = (Wage × Hours) + Additional-Hours Pay + Shift Premium + Additional Earnings

Salary Gross Pay = (Annual Salary ÷ Pay Periods per Year) + Additional Earnings

Annualized Gross Pay = Total Gross Pay × Pay Periods per Year

Worked Example 1: Hourly Employee

Calculation for a weekly hourly employee earning $25.00/hr working 40 regular hours, plus 5 additional hours at 1.5x multiplier and a $100.00 bonus:

  • Regular Pay: $25.00 × 40 = $1,000.00 CAD
  • Additional-Hours Rate: $25.00 × 1.5 = $37.50 CAD / hr
  • Additional-Hours Pay: $37.50 × 5 = $187.50 CAD
  • Bonus: $100.00 CAD
  • Total Gross Pay for Period: $1,000.00 + $187.50 + $100.00 = $1,287.50 CAD
  • Estimated Annualized Gross Pay: $1,287.50 × 52 = $66,950.00 CAD

Worked Example 2: Salaried Employee

Calculation for a salaried employee earning $52,000.00 annual salary paid biweekly (26 pay periods) who receives a $250.00 sales commission in this pay period:

  • Base Biweekly Gross Salary: $52,000.00 ÷ 26 = $2,000.00 CAD
  • Commission: $250.00 CAD
  • Total Gross Pay for Period: $2,000.00 + $250.00 = $2,250.00 CAD
  • Estimated Annualized Gross Pay: $2,250.00 × 26 = $58,500.00 CAD

Important Limitations

This calculator adds the amounts entered and does not determine legal entitlement to overtime, vacation pay, public holiday pay, commissions or other compensation.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is gross pay?

Gross pay is your total pre-tax earnings for a pay period before deductions for income tax, CPP, or EI.

2. What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is total compensation earned. Net pay (take-home pay) is what remains after mandatory taxes and payroll deductions.

3. Does this calculator deduct income tax, CPP or EI?

No. This calculator measures total gross pre-tax earnings only.

4. How is hourly gross pay calculated?

Multiply regular hourly wage by regular hours, then add any additional-hours pay, shift premiums, bonuses, commissions, or tips.

5. How is salaried gross pay calculated?

Divide annual gross salary by the number of pay periods in a year (e.g., 26 for biweekly), then add any bonus, commission, or extra earnings for that period.

6. Can I add overtime or additional-hours pay?

Yes. Check + Include additional-hours pay to specify additional hours with either a multiplier (such as 1.5x) or a custom rate.

7. Does the calculator determine my legal overtime rate?

No. Multipliers are user-selectable for calculation. Statutory overtime eligibility depends on the governing provincial, territorial or federal rules and the worker’s coverage.

8. Can I add vacation and holiday pay?

Yes. Enter vacation or public holiday pay already calculated or provided to you under additional earnings.

9. What does annualized gross pay mean?

It estimates total annual earnings if the current pay period’s earnings repeated for all pay periods in a full year.

10. Why might annualized gross pay be unrealistic?

If your pay period includes a one-time bonus or variable commission, multiplying it across all annual pay periods will overstate annual income.

11. Can I import hours from the Work Hours Calculator?

Yes. Clicking Use these hours in Gross Pay Calculator on the Work Hours tool automatically transfers your total decimal hours into regular hours.

12. Does WageWise store my pay information?

No. All calculations run strictly in your web browser. No financial data is saved or transmitted.
