Wage Calculator Accuracy, Rounding and Limitations
Understand what calculator tests can verify, where rounding occurs and why a correct formula can still be wrong for an unsupported scenario.
Key point
Accuracy has three layers: correct inputs, the correct legal rule and correct arithmetic. Automated fixtures verify arithmetic and boundaries, but they cannot decide disputed worker status, jurisdiction or exemptions.
- Validate normal, boundary, zero, invalid and excluded cases.
- Keep full precision during calculation and round displayed currency consistently.
- Show assumptions and unsupported scenarios beside the result.
What automated tests cover
Fixtures check published examples, thresholds, anniversaries, lookback averages, invalid ranges and overlapping overtime logic. Client and server implementations are compared to the same specification.
Rounding
Intermediate values should retain enough precision to avoid compounding error. Displayed Canadian currency is normally rounded to cents, but payroll systems and statutory guidance may prescribe a specific sequence.
What an estimate cannot decide
A calculator cannot establish employee status, choose the correct jurisdiction from disputed facts, interpret a contract, decide just cause or replace a labour authority, payroll professional or lawyer.
